The Holiday Season has arrived. This has always been my favorite time of the year. The Gillingham clan puts in lots of miles getting to all of our family gatherings. The challenge for most strength addicts, this time of the year, is to keep our training schedule regular between Christmas gatherings, and to try to share some of Mother’s pies with the rest of the siblings. On the other hand….maybe Christmas is a good time to detrain a little, both in the weight room and with the diet!
This is always a great time at Jackals Gym. Every year we have several of our (Jackals Nation) members come back home over the holidays and stop in for some workouts. This always makes for a great training atmosphere. Several of the SMSU wrestlers have been training at the gym over the holidays. We have had some intense deadlift and squat workouts, and the weather has been warm enough to get in our GPP (functional strength, strongman, loaded carries) in the unheated back of the gym. With all of the GPP we have been training this fall; some of the guys are actually stronger mid-season than at the end of our pre-season testing.
My oldest daughter Emily is home from college. It has been great spending some time in the weight room with both her and Lizzy. Emily is already putting in a lot of miles with her indoor track season starting soon. We are not lifting quite as heavy as we did in previous winters, but she is getting stronger and faster. We have been concentrating mainly on mobility work and explosive training. Lizzy is right in the middle of her basketball season so we are trying to get in enough workouts when we can to maintain her strength and keep her healthy.
With the New Year coming soon, I always like to establish some training goals. I say this every year, but I really feel that setting new goals is important to maintain a purpose for your training. Setting goals is what drives us all to put in the extra work to make those tough gains. My goals for 2018 are to stay healthy, stay strong, and get the deadlift back over 800 lbs. I benefitted a lot in 2017 by adding all of the GPP work back into my training. I made a lot of progress in the areas of cardiovascular fitness, mobility, and functional strength. With some hard work ahead, I feel that another 800 lb. competition deadlift can be done in 2018!

I’ve had to back off my volume in the powerlifts gradually as I have gotten older. I can’t do as many 5x5 squat workouts, week after week, anymore. I usually train 5x5 on an every other week basis with an 8x2 speed/active recovery workout in between. It is really hard for me to train 5x5 in the bench. I have replaced this with 5x3. I too believe goals are vital to keeping yourself focused, it doesn't need to be at the end or beginning of every year but keeping goal attainable and fresh are the best. Looking forward to the new year big guy.Posted By Coach Z on 24/12/2017
