I am happy to report that I made it back to the competition platform this past weekend. I competed in a small USAPL Invitational Meet held at American Strength Training Center in Maplewood, MN. This is the first time I have lifted in a meet since October of 2015. It is only my second competition since I developed a DVT blood clot during a long plane trip back from Australia in April of 2014. The DVT escalated into several complications including a pulmonary embolism and atrial fibrillation. The medicine that I was prescribed to combat the problem made me very weak in the legs and back. I was not able to lift very heavy for much of this time. In April, I was finally cleared to quit taking blood thinners, and my other medications were reduced. Since that time, my strength started to slowly return. In July, I made the decision to try to compete again.
With the goal in mind to qualify for the 2017 Raw Nationals, I took my lifting very conservative and ended up with a 9/9 day and 27 white lights. I squatted 584 lbs., benched 451 lbs., and deadlifted 705 lbs. I accomplished my goal of exceeding the qualifying total for the USA Powerlifting Raw Nationals. All three third attempts were easy, and I left a lot in the tank for the next time. Two other members of Jackals Gym also competed in the meet. Gary Grahn had a nice day on the platform. He lifted close to his RAW PRs. Gary has been lifting, coaching, announcing and supporting lifting for many years. Always fun to lift in a meet with Gary. Lucas Damm qualified for Junior Nationals in his first meet. Lucas was a two-time Minnesota State High School Wrestling Champion that we are converting into a powerlifter. He is a powerhouse, at the young age of 22, and has a real bright future in the sport. I am proud to say that the three of us went 27/27 on the day with no missed attempts.
A big thanks goes out to meet director Jim Cahill, all of the volunteer judges, spotters and loaders, and American Strength Training Center for hosting this meet. After a short rest, I will begin my training for the USAPL Raw Nationals in Orlando, Florida in October. It is now time to set some new post 50 year-old goals.
