I attended the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s (NSCA) Tactical Strength and Conditioning (TSAC) Conference last week with GNC in Orlando, Florida. The TSAC program provides strength and conditioning training to law enforcement, fire and rescue, emergency services, and military personal. The main emphasis is to help increase performance and longevity of tactical athletes and to prevent injuries. I had a great time talking with many great people and attending a few of the presentations. An added bonus was the great Florida weather and the location of the conference at the Wyndham Orlando Resort. There is nothing wrong with a cold weather Minnesotan enjoying some poolside sun in between events. I have attended many National NSCA Conferences, but this was my first time attending TSAC. I hope to attend the conference again next year.
I am often asked about how I train when I am traveling. To be honest, at 50 years old the grind of traveling, and then standing on my feet all day makes it tough for me to try to work out very heavy when attending conferences. The thought of training heavy squats and deadlifts is completely out of the picture. I was able to get in a light mobility workout at the resort gym the day after arrival. There was not much accessibility to free weights in the gym, but I always recover better from traveling if I can do some machine work, bodyweight exercises and get creative with dumbbells. I can generally train the upper body heavier. Fortunately, there was a lot of training activity centered around the SORINEX Exercise Equipment Booth. I was able to get in a speed bench, and upper body workout with Burt Sorin, and a great group of strength athletes during one of the morning workouts. I also messed around with the Thompson Fatbells a little bit. I had never trained with these before. They are similar to a kettlebell, but the inside of the bell is hollow and there is a handle in the middle of the bell. You stick your hand into the bell, and grab onto the handle. I think this is a unique piece of equipment to train a number of different assistance work movements.
Train smart, stay healthy, set your goals high, and make sure to add GNC Pro Performance HMB along with BetaTOR and BetaATP products, available at your local GNC Store, to supplement your strength, energy and recovery needs. These products are essential for any athlete that wants to train harder and recover faster!
